book club, i love you!

On Friday night I had my first girls night in Ventura...I know, I know, it only took about 15 months, but let me tell you it was well worth the wait!

Liz, Edith and I met at Edith's house for wine, cheese and a book chat about Eat, Pray, Love. Of course I had not yet finished the book, but it did not make any difference in discussing the book.

I have never been a part of a book club, and boy oh boy have I been missing out! It was an amazing experience. The three of us were at a constant state of sqwaking. We must have covered 15 different topics and never missed a beat.

While I have about 30 pages left of the book I think it is safe to say I LOVED it. It was so amazing to read about her journey, she writes about it so well. I literally felt like I was taken to another place every time I opened the book. Reading about her experience finding herself was something I think anyone and everyone can related to. I think we all spend so much of our life doing what we think others and society expect from us. We do not spend enough time finding out what makes us happy.

We touched on many topics from the book that lead us to some deep thoughts and sharing of our own lives, it was truly and amazing experience. I think one of the things we spent some time discussing and we also continued to come back to was the idea that Americans don't know how to enjoy something or take pleasure in it. "Americans know entertainment, but you don't know pleasure..." We know how to do things that entertain us, but we do not know how to truly take pleasure in something, to enjoy things in life. I think a big difference between pleasure and entertainment is that with entertainment we are expecting something, and we usually pay for it. We do not take pleasure in the many things around us.
The book prompted us to discuss so many topics, it was a great way for the three of us to really get to know one another. Plus we got to drink wine, and eat cheese and bruschetta, who could ask for more?!

Scott turns 27...a little late...

gosh, I sure am behind on my posts....Scott's birthday was July 13th, we did a little celebration the weekend before. A few fun gifts and a nice dinner out at a wine bistro...
I don't know why, but we never seem to do anything super thrilling for his birthday. I think because he literally doesn't want to do anything and to really surprise him with a trip or mini-vacation I'd have to talk to someone at his command...at this point in life and his career I'm not ready to do that...maybe next year we will do something wild and crazy...

le gifts...

official golf shirt...

testing out the golf shirt...

guessing gift number two...

gift number two a fantasy msmanchy computer bag...

on our way to dinner...

the next day at the camarillo block festival...

oh my long hair, it was gorgeous, but a pain in the butt to maintain!

eat, pray, love...love it!

If you've been keeping up you know that I am starting a club...and in that club we will be having a book club.

{Doesn't it sound so very 4th grade to say I am starting a club?! Well, it is a Navy Enlisted Spouses' Club, and to be an entity on the base we must call ourselves a club, so very elementary school, huh...but still clubs were always fun as a kid and they are fun now! Especially because now you can have wine at this club, haha

E and L and I have decided we will start a practice round of the book club and are reading Eat, Pray, Love...can I just say that I am in love! full on LOVE. This book is amazing, every time I open my ipad to read it I swear it is like a play/movie is going on in my head. I have such a vivid idea of what the people look like and the surroundings. I of course have Julia Roberts as the main character since she is the character in the movie, but i have to say that beyond having her look, i have no idea if the character in my head is the same as the one that is on the big screen. {worlds longest sentence, I think so!}

We are going to see the movie after we finish the book and I think Julia Roberts is going to be FABULOUS in it. I love her, so. She just seems so real and down to earth, unlike some hollywood stars...ahem. A. Jolie...ahem

Reading the book really makes me think about and re-evaluate so many things. I obviously am not going through a divorce (not giving anything away) nor do I plan to ever be, but it still gives a lot of thought and value to the way you live your every day life...I am a lot like Liz, very much needing to be in control.

It also makes you want to take a year off and explore the world...anyone wanna flip the bill?!

suzy homemaker, meet betty crocker

A few weekends ago I had an urge to make red velvet cupcakes from scratch with cream cheese icing. Oh. My. Gosh. they were yummy, and surprisingly easy to make! I was inspired by watching a marathon of DC cupcakes on TLC. This was Friday night.

Fast forward to Saturday morning and Betty crocker has a sick husband. I am not talking cold and flu sick, I am talking in the bathroom every 5 minutes sick!

***Let me just take a moment to note it wasn't from my cooking. On Monday at work Scott found out half his shop was sick from the bbq they had the past Thursday! So I can keep my cooking badge, I didn't cause the hubs to spend all of Saturday dealing with death. ***

He could not keep anything down for about 8 hours.

I decided this would be a perfect time to try my hand at homemade chicken noodle soup. I spent about 4 hours making the soup and being Suzy homemaker, scrubbing the floors, cleaning the living and dining room and doing laundry.

I have to say, minus Scott being sick on Saturday that weekend was very mellow and relaxing. Baking and cooking can really bring you to a very calming state of mind.

The soup was so much better then canned, and if you put a little hot sauce in it, it is out of this world!

***this was also my first time taking a part a full chicken, pretty intense***

how we spent our 4th of july!

I know it is the middle of august and I am just getting to the 4th of July, but hey, better late then never!

The 4th of July was not your normal bbq and fireworks day for us, we had a friends wedding to attend. We spent the morning going on a walk with Khloe. We also made sure to get our 4th of july festive faces on since we would not be able to join in the fireworks celebration that evening...

Here are some photos of us during the day. don't you love the stripes...

Here are a few photos of us at the wedding. It was at a beautiful country club in the mountains. We did not even feel like we were in southern california...

I wanna start a club!

So guess what, I did!

Crazy, right?!

I have been in search of a good social support system up here but have had no luck. Scott is at a shore command, for all you non Military folks that means he does not deploy while we are stationed here. Good for us, bad for my social life. All of the commands at our base that do deploy have a family readiness group, me, not so much. Thus the idea of starting and enlisted spouses club sprang to.

I have been in meetings getting the blessing from all the big wigs here at base. To say it is was a struggle in the beginning would be the understatement of the century, but never fail, I am as persistent as the come! I did not give up and am now in the marketing stage of getting spouses interested.

My bestest gal pal in Ventura, Edith is my right hand gal, and my newest gal pal, Liz, has jumped on board with my crazy dream. The three of us are going to change the world! Ok, so maybe not the world, but you have to dream big right?!!?

I am also going to be starting a column on our base newspaper that is about being newly married to the military. I am really excited to get to take my corky writing skills and stories to the streets. I will be sure to share my articles with you all as well!

In other news, I have been trying to upload wedding photos to the blog and it just isn’t happening. Just as they are about to be done uploading the website goes cra cra. Not sure why, I think I might need to do some adjustments to my laptop. So, until then we will have to continue on with the every day ramblings of a gal trying to change the world, one glass of wine and crazy hair brained scheme at a time…
