DIY: ikea coffee table makeover

Happy Monday Friends! I am starting off the week we a funny and easy DIY project that is sure to add color to your home.

I have wanted to get this post up for a few weeks now. In early March I decided it was time to redo our cheap Ikea coffee table. I am pretty sure we have all seen the simple Ikea coffee table, or even own one.

Our living room is too dark.  Think brown couch, dark tv stand and dark coffee table.  There is not enough color for me and our coffee table is less than pleasing to my eyes.

{the infamous coffee table}

Solution: a can of Zinsser primer {it is for all surfaces, so I did not have to sand it, hallelujah!} and a can of pale french gold paint by Behr.

{after a few coats of primer and paint}

After painting the table I needed to figure out what to do with the bottom shelf.  I recently purchased a few sheets of gorgeous floral wrapping paper from Paper Source, what better way to add more color to this coffee table.

{bottom shelf, I didn't worry about the paint being perfect because I knew I was going to cover it}

I decided the easiest way to adhere the paper was to use mod podge and decoupage it on. I laid the shelf on the paper to outline the size and cut out the paper. I covered the shelf with the decoupage and placed the paper on top. I then went over the paper with a few coats of the mod podge and then finally a thin coat of polyurethane.  {I also added 2 coats of polyurethane to the coffee table after the paint was dry}

Tada! our old boring $20 Ikea coffee table is now a bold and bright piece of furniture in our living room.

{the carpet is from Urban Outfitters}

Every morning when I walk into the living room I smile.

I am now contemplating painting our Ikea tv stand. Beware husband, color is coming!

What items in your home could use a good coat of bright paint?

Hahaha- YES! I have that exact table and matching end tables in our living room. For as cheap as they were I am scared to death to paint them since we move so often! Like right now the walls in our living room are a light green- who knows what they'll be next! We also have fabulous natural light, but this is super cute though! I'll have to remember that next move!

The floral wrapping paper is gorgeous! It really adds to the project. At my house we are repainting the antique outdoor furniture some funky colors. Cant wait to see it all come together.
